What is an elective ultrasound?

An elective ultrasound is a non-medical ultrasound intended to provide a positive bonding experience for mom, dad, siblings, family and friends.  We feel that the realistic images provide a unforgettable connection between baby and family.

What is the difference between a 2D, 3D, HD and 4D ultrasounds?

2D ultrasounds are the traditional black & white ultrasounds; this is the type of ultrasound that was used for your diagnostic ultrasound.  It is still the best technology for obtaining diagnostic measurements and ensuring that the baby is developing as expected.  We use this technology for gender determination and heartbeats.  3D ultrasounds are the 1st generation of realistic imaging, we’ve found that HD is preferable.  HD ultrasounds provide images that look like pictures of your baby rather than a standard black and white 2D ultrasound.  You can see the definition of the baby's face, the shape of the nose and the contours of the lips.  The color is computer generated to enhance the pictures and to make them more appealing.  All ultrasounds done at Little Peek Boutique are done in 4D imaging which means live motion.

When is the best time for an ultrasound?

It all depends on what you want to see.  Many mothers like coming to us twice; early on between 16 and 26 weeks and then again between 26 to 34 weeks.  After 34 weeks, it can become difficult to obtain good pictures due to space.  However, we’ve been successful obtaining breathtaking pictures up to 39 weeks.  See our best time guide below:

  • 8 to 15 weeks - Hear your baby’s heart beat and see baby begin to grow.
  • 16 to 20 weeks - Best time for gender determination. You’ll see your baby’s entire body and the face begin to develop.
  • 21 to 26 weeks - Capture the first images of your baby’s facial features!  This is also the optimal time to visualize baby’s movement.
  • 26 to 30 weeks - Your baby’s features are now more defined, see how big baby has grown.
  • 31 to 34 weeks - Baby can now be visualized in greater detail.  Although your baby is too big to capture in a single image it is a great time for close up views.

How early can you determine gender?

We have partnered with SneakPeek® Clinical to offer gender DNA testing as early as 9 weeks.  Gender determination via ultrasound can be performed around 16 weeks.

How can I ensure the best possible pictures?

Most importantly by maintaining a healthy water intake throughout your pregnancy, this helps ensure your amniotic fluid is as clear as possible.  Additionally, eat something prior to your appointment so your baby is awake.  Keep in mind that there are many factors out of our control like baby’s position, mother’s build and amount of amniotic fluid.  Ultrasounds work best when the sound waves have plenty of fluid to travel through.  If mom is well hydrated this will optimize the images.  Increased body weight of the mother can often affect the quality because sound does not travel as easily through tissue as it does fluid.  Full figured mothers should consider having their ultrasound session around 31-35 weeks.

Will I always get great images of my baby?

Most of the time we are able to get great images but not always.  If baby is persistently looking face down or breach, it may be difficult to see the baby’s face.  If this happens a repeat scan will usually succeed because it allows time for baby to move into a more favorable position.  All babies scan differently depending on age, position, amniotic fluid levels, and moms’ condition.  We promise to make every effort to obtain the best possible images of whatever parts of the baby we can see.

What if I don't want to know the gender?

That’s ok, many families opt out of gender determination just let us know ahead of time.

Does this take place of an ultrasound at my doctor’s office?

Absolutely not!  You must currently be under the care of a provider for prenatal care and have already undergone a diagnostic ultrasound.  This session will not provide any assumptions, diagnosis or medical input; it is not intended to take place of a diagnostic ultrasound or any other medical procedures recommended by your health care provider.

Will my doctor be contacted about the ultrasound?

We do not contact your doctor prior to the scan.  Our ultrasound technicians will not and cannot diagnosis.  This is strictly an elective ultrasound.

What is your facility like?

We pride ourselves in giving clients a unique experience in our relaxing, non-medical setting.  Feel free to bring your family and friends with you to enjoy this amazing session, we can accommodate a large group in our ultrasound room and have 2 large TVs that mirror the images from the ultrasound machine.

Are ultrasounds safe?

Ultrasounds have been used for over 35 years and extensive studies have shown not to cause any harm to mother or baby.  Ultrasounds utilize sound waves to look inside the body.  The same type and intensity of ultrasound is used with HD as with conventional 2D scanning.  We strictly adhere to the FDA’s standards and employ Licensed Ultrasonographers.
